Florida Sea Grant Case Study
CLIENT: Florida Sea Grant
SERVICE: eLearning Translation, Subtitling & Voice Over
FORMAT: eLearning Course
SUBJECT MATTER: Technical/Fishing Industry
THE CUSTOMER:
Florida Sea Grant is a university-based program that supports research, education and extension to conserve coastal resources and enhance economic opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The State University System of Florida, the State of Florida, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in a strong partnership, have implemented sweeping change.
For almost 50 years, they have maximized federal and state resources to support applied research, influence policy-making, and provide training for students and professionals. Their mission is to educate and engage citizens, building more resilient communities across the state.
OUR CHALLENGE:
This project started thanks to a recommendation from a colleague at Florida Sea Grant, with whom we had previously collaborated. Following this recommendation, a new department within the organization contacted us to propose a challenging translation project.
The project entailed translating an eLearning course from English to Spanish. The course trained recreational anglers on how to properly manipulate and release reef fish, and provided techniques to preserve marine wildlife. This educational module included numerous interactive components, images, and especially videos, for which they wanted to add subtitles to enhance accessibility.
After reviewing the material, we realized that subtitles alone would not suffice, as a significant part of the user interaction would be lost. In this case, the perfect solution was to add a voiceover service to the subtitles, thus ensuring a richer and more effective educational experience.
OUR SOLUTION:
We offered the client to combine subtitles and voiceover. Given the nature of the project’s content, user interaction would be greatly enhanced by including voiceover. We suggested adding Spanish narration while keeping the English audio in the background at a very low volume, to additionally maintain the original language.
The client understood that following said recommendation would have a very positive impact on the project and immediately agreed, thanking us for the proposal. They were highly satisfied with the result. We, in turn, were very pleased to have understood the client’s needs and to have expanded the scope of the project, providing them with the best alternative to enhance it.
At Idea Translations, we strive to make each project unique and ensure that the material achieves its full potential. Therefore, we analyze each client request in detail, providing feedback and suggestions to always ensure the best outcome.
